'CORRIDOR COMPILATION' ALBUM REVIEW:

I've been fortunate enough to know the cool dude behind Corridor from Deviantart for some time, and he was kind enough to send me complimentary CD copies of new releases in the past, which still sit among the rest of my large black metal CD collection.

Think of oldschool black metal (Darkthrone, Mayhem, early Emperor, Immortal) and you'll have an idea where Corridor's stuff is coming from, but there's a lot more to it than that. When I refer to other bands and albums in writing reviews, I never mean it negatively, as in "This stuff sounds just like these other guys" but is more of how I describe the music to a new listener; rather, "If you like that or think that's cool, then check this out." And like those bands mentioned above, Corridor iconography is relentlessly stark, cold, uncompromising, pagan and primitive. Like the music the artwork and imagery is jagged and sharp, spiky, deceptive in its simplicity, and it fits the sounds perfectly. You always get the feeling there are bigger concepts going on behind the scenes.

Corridor don't write long songs, in fact they're usually pretty short. Not so short as to be riduclous in an early Napalm Death/S.O.D stylee, but brief enough to have you wanting to hear more. The good thing is, on this compilation there's plenty more - 22 tracks in all. And like the Ramones, if you don't happen to like a track, another one will be along in a minute, so just relax. The instrumentation is deliberately primitive - drums go bash, guitars hack and saw. As an ex-bassist I somtimes miss the heavy bottom end in a lot of black and death metal, but that scratchy, trebly sound is what helps to define the genre and the feelings and atmosphere that go with it, so minimal bass is never a criticism.

'Unlock The Worlds' has a little of 'Hvis Lyset'-era Burzum in the rhythms, and the overall relentless tone - although is much shorter and sharper. It's a dark and cold opener, setting the scene for an album described as 'cold dark and primitive'. You'll know by the time you're 60 seconds into this tune if it's going to be your bag, or not. It's mine, and so I continue to pick out a few highlights:

Sky Burial reminds me a tad of American hardcore, maybe something from the Rollins era of Black Flag but less gonzoid in its guitar work. The vocals sound less like someone gettig angry, as getting even - by any means necessary.

Next up is Commander, which in its distorted vocals and repetitive rhythm again invokes something akin to Buruzm's 'Dunkelheit', and like a lot of Corridor material uses a brief sample to chilling effect.

On The Third Day, Rap Could Not Rise Again is a title that made me smile when I read it.

Dark Age Doom clocks in at 3.14 and is the longest track on this comp. This is one track which is summed up totally by the title - barren soundscapes of primeval scariness. Definitely one to play at parties to separate your hardcore metal buddies from the pretend posers. Mix this with something from Bathory's 'The Return' and laugh at those "WTF?" faces!

Devil God Asylum is a title that the Misfits and Slayer could easily have fought each other for the right to use. I do especially like this one, as I'm a big fan of cymbal work in drum parts, and there's an unexpected half-time breakdown just for variety.

Jazz Sucks is a funny closer to the album, very punky and upbeat in its rhythm. No worrying dark pagan imagery here - the title literally says it all.

So what are you waiting for? Go check it out! \o/
